Mineral King ; Sequoia National Forest ; Walt Disney Company ; Sierra Club
Description:
The United States Forest Service first proposed recreational development of the Mineral King area in the 1940's. In the 1960's, they introduced plans for a ski resort, and the Walt Disney Company expressed interest. Environmentalists, led by the Sierra Club, spearheaded opposition to these plans, which ultimately led to the end of any development in the Mineral King Valley. The collection contains background information, government documents, Sierra Club materials, files from the Walt Disney Company, maps, photographs, and artifacts. Most of it was collected by John Harper, a geography professor at Humboldt State University, as research for his book, Mineral King: public concern with government policy.
