In response to the five-year strike and boycott conducted by the United Farm Workers Organizing Committee against California table grape growers, Al Caplan was hired by the growers to negotiate with the union. The aim of the UFWOC action was to bring about the unionization of the Coachella Valley table grape industry. The Negotiating Committee and UFWOC bargained for years until 1978, when union president Cesar Chavez called off the boycott. The collection is comprised chiefly of scrapbooks detailing actions of growers and farmworkers in the Coachella Valley. A folder of materials relates to the Californians for Right to Work organization and California Senate Bill 1119 (1969), which aimed to prevent compulsory unionization in the industry
